January Library Event Schedule
The Tyler Public Library and East Texas Storytellers’ exciting folklore program continues into the New Year with more Talking Tales! Every second Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in the Taylor Auditorium, talented storytellers regale patrons with folklore, legends and lore from all around the world. On January 10th, our storytellers will share stories of the beginning and creation!
Talking Tea Woman’s Veterans Group
Join the East Texas Veterans Community Council for tea and lively discussion in this new program for women veterans. Women are invited to join us every second Friday of the month in the Makerspace room on the third floor. The first meeting will be Friday, Jan. 11, from 5 to 6 p.m.
Parlez-vous francais? You can answer that question with “Oui!” after you join our French Class, back by popular demand! A skilled Instructor ¬¬¬will guide patrons through beginner’s French in two two-hour courses Saturday, Jan. 12 and Saturday, Jan. 19, from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. Classes will be held at the tables beside the paperbacks on the second floor.
As Liberty Hall undergoes some exciting renovations, Reel Talk will not meet for the month of January. The prestigious lecture series makes its annual return to the Tyler Public Library, starting Sunday, Jan. 16. For eight weeks, knowledgeable lecturers from various fields of study will discuss current topics facing our world, from US-Mexican relations to cyber security and much more. Each lecture will take place Wednesdays from 12 p.m. until 1 p.m. in the Taylor Auditorium.
The Master Gardeners are bringing their annual lecture series on gardening, plant life and all things horticulture back to the Tyler Public Library! Once a month through May, the Master Gardeners have invited talented speakers to speak in the Taylor Auditorium on the third Friday of the month, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The first meeting will be Friday, Jan 18.
The Tyler Public Library’s Adulting 101 program continues to teach adults and teens how to “adult” better on Saturday, Jan. 19th at 2 p.m. in the Taylor Auditorium. This month, the Library will give a seminar on the basics of renting, houses and apartments.
On Saturday, Jan. 12, from 12 until 2 p.m. the Library Maker space will host a project for kids and families in creating their very own Beaded Critter or Insect.
On Wednesday, Jan. 26, from 12 until 2 p.m. the Library Makerspace will host an event on magnetism.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day
In observation of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the library will close Monday, Jan. 21. The library will resume normal business hours Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 10 a.m. Any choosing to return their items on the holiday are welcome to do so using the AV Drop on the side of the building; no items’ due dates will be scheduled on the holiday.
The Tyler Public Library will host the United States Post Office in our Taylor Auditorium for a Passport Fair, January 26 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Post Office will provide forms and assistance to patrons who wish to obtain or update their passport. Please bring a photo ID and proof of citizenship. Pricing information can be found at https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/requirements/fees.html.
If you would like to know more about the basics of computers, or just get a refresher on how to navigate the internet or use Windows, the Tyler Public Library is here to help! Library staff is also willing to help with phone and tablets. On the last Saturday of every month, the Tyler Public Library will use our Digital Learn resource to assist patrons in a Basic Computer Class in our Computer Lab, starting at 9 a.m. This month’s class will be held Saturday, January 26. Those interested must register for classes by going to https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b054aa9ad2fa0f49-basic, or by calling the Library at (903) 593-7323 and asking for the Information Desk.
Our long-running book club returns to the Tyler Public Library January 29th! Meeting every last Tuesday of the month at 10 a.m. in the Taylor Auditorium, Club Read meets to discuss new works creating a buzz as well as literary classics. Brews and Boards
The Tyler Public Library and ETX Brewing Co. ongoing program Brews and Boards continues January 31st at 7 p.m. While ETX provides the “brews” of all varieties, Library staff will be on hand with old favorites and teaching new games. Any attendee is welcome to add a donation to the Tyler Public Library when closing out their tab. ETX Brewing Co. is located at 7302, 221 S Broadway Ave in Downtown Tyler. The Library asks that all attendees drive responsibly after the program.
Winter Movie Break
Need something to do once all the gifts are unwrapped? Join us at the Library for a winter movie break every morning at 10:30 a.m. from Tuesday, Jan 2 through Friday, Jan. 4. Families are invited to watch a fun feature length films in the library’s auditorium. Movie titles are available at www.TylerLibrary.com. Pillows, blankets, and carpet friendly snacks welcome.
Enjoy time with your family by watching a fun family-friendly film on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 10:30 a.m. in the Library’s auditorium. Due to licensing limitations, the name of the film cannot be published here, but check out the Library’s website for more details! We feature a movie the third Saturday of the month, September through May, so mark your calendars for free family entertainment!
Lego Block Party
The Lego® Block Party returns to the Library’s auditorium from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec 1. Bricks, wheels, building plates, doors, windows and more are there to stir your imagination. Children of all ages and their families are welcome to attend. We have this program on the first Saturday of the month, September through May, so mark your calendars for building fun!
It’s Story Time
Come enjoy one of our many story times! Programs are available for families with children as old as 5 years old, and as young as infants. Events for toddlers are registration only; contact the library for more information. Other story times are walk-in programs, all in the Library’s auditorium:
• Mondays at 10:30 a.m. Léeme Un Cuento, our Spanish preschool story time
• Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. Lap & Play time for Babies
• Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. Read Aloud Crowd for Preschoolers
Teen Tuesdays are for students in grades 6 through 12 to come and be themselves at the Library. Events run 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. and include Sphero Robot Maze, Board Games and Beverages, Wii Games, and Condiment Conundrum Taste Test.
